Just changed my car battery and after starting up with the new battery fitted the ESP Fault light has come on with a yellow steering wheel symbol on the dashboard! Can someone shed any light on this or do I now need to visit my dealer? I don't have VCDS do access any fault codes. I didn't have the fault before changing the battery.

The lights may go off if you drive it Thats normall mate, just have a drive round the block, it will go off after a few hundred meters. Silky-S3Mar 7, Did your steering get all wobbly on you for a bit? Sidhu88Mar 8, I was actually on the way to a mechanic with vagcom to check it then it went off as i was driving. The steering wheel symbol was on as i pulled out onto the main road and the car was pulling all over the place for a few seconds then the light went off and steering went back to normal.

I think its just due to the system resetting itself somehow. I reckon a few meters of driving passes signals to the ecu which shows there are no faults n then the lights go off. The steering is probably recalibration, or its figuring out its position. Sidhu88Mar 13, All lights go off after driving a short distance - I have disconnected my battery on numerous occasions and changed it last weekend.

BoydieMar 13, Hi all I have a A3 and on three occasions now the car has somehow disconneced itself and the esp light and steering light both yellow come on, but dissapear after i drive off. The weired thing is this has occured after heavy rain only!!!Th problem may start out as an intermittent failure, but will become permanent if not resolved early. Search My Stuff What's New 3 12 24 On the way home today luckily, the end of my road the ESP light came on on the dash, followed by the engine cutting out. Restarted the car, cut out again, restarted the car and used the throttle to keep the engine running. ESP light will not go out and if off throttle, the engine has a bad misfire, then cuts out after 10 seconds or so.

If you use a bit of throttle, there is still a bad misfire, but doesn't cut out. Engine Management Light has not come on, so not sure where to start. Car is A3 3. Help please! Is there a good independent specialist in either South Herts home or Northampton work area? If you plug it back in its fine.

Either your MAF has failed or is not connected firmly. Hope this helps.

Tame Technician 2, posts months. MAF will not cause these faults. Only going by what used to happen to my A3 model so old shape but If I unplugged the MAF assume thats what is is - electrical connector near airbox car would show the ESP light, and would not keep idle you had to keep foot on the pedal like the OP is having to do so, when I reconnected it problem went.

However it is a newer A3 so could be different issue. Edited by giggity on Wednesday 19th January The no idle is usually caused by an air leak, and a big one, but can be down the a throttle body fault, any throttle body fault will put the EPC light on, and so many people even me have once in a while got that muddled up with ESP. Need to look for air leaks first, get someone to hold the revs up say so it runs and listen for hissing under the bonnet, split hose, or even the oil fillter cap off or dip stick not fully down can cause it.

ETA - Air leak will cause misfire too. Edited by Tame Technician on Wednesday 19th January Just had another play around, there seems to be a hissing from under the inlet manifold, where it goes over the cam cover, but I can't really make out exactly where it comes from. When the engine is switched off it makes a much louder hiss, but again cant really work out where its coming from.

The engine wasn't cutting out this time though, i left it to idle for 15 seconds or so, didnt even misfire, revved it to about 3k, lifted off and let it idle for 15 seconds and again didn't even misfire. A pipe on mine split too, it was the brake servo pipe So yes no breaking assist, but again it would not idle on its own. Never going to own an Audi again. Rebadged VW s t. Sorry rant over. Hundreds of threads on the internet about it! So this is embarassing Dropped the car into a VAG specialist near work, and they diagnosed two issues: MAF has gone, and lambda sensors were fitted wrong way round numpties who fitted my exhaust last year!We use cookies to make the site easier to use.

The light on the dash is on permanently. Having now done some research i can see this is a very common fault in VW's but i'm trying to gauge how many other Audi owners are out there with this same problem. Has anyone had much success in getting compensation from Audi? Regardless of how i fair i will not buy another Audi just based on their customer service - it's shocking to say the least. Not that this is much help but ABS pump failed on my VW polo a few years ago when it was less than 40k miles and around 3.

Keen photographer with sales in the UK and abroad. Willing to offer advice on camera equipment and photography if i can! Generally if you had you car regularly serviced within the BMW dealer network, BMW have been willing to make a goodwill gesture of the cost of parts.I have tried replacing the sensor unit with a refurbished one 10 year guarantee? Light still on so firm sent another one, still no joy. Not sure if it is the sensor unit as could also be wiring or connectors from brake electronics, abs unit, to esp sensor.

Has anybody had this problem and if so how did they resolve it. Many thanks in anticipation. Not too sure what part you have replaced, but the G is the steering angle sensor that sits behind the steering wheel and measures steering angle and rate of rotation. All part of the esp system.

The Audi Workshop Manuals refers to the sensor unit G as being underneath the right hand seat and it's this that was replaced. The ESP sensor contains the following senders: lateral acceleration sender-G, yaw rate sender-G and longitude acceleration sender-G only for 4 wheel drive vehicles.

After fitting the VCDS couldn't communicate with the unit as tried to calibrate the lateral acceleration sender G within the unit. As already said I replaced the original unit with refurbished units instead of new to save cost perhaps could try second hand unit but no way of telling if they work. Just worried it may be the connectionsor wiring fault.

Does anybody know where the ESP control unit is? No way of knowing if they were in working order. Does anybody know how I could test the sensor unit to see if it is working, the original is back in the car?

Just to let you know, the ESP warning light first came on during a journey and stayed on for the rest of the day. It has stayed on ever since. Does this indicate anything?

Perhaps eleki can confirm that. I would be checking out the wiring to make sure all is ok there. Seem to have misread the op and is not the sterring angle sensor.

However it may be an idea to read the actual value live data of this to make sure it is working ok.Dashboard lights may vary depending on the version of the Audi A3 S3 and the country in which it was manufactured. A red symbol often required immediate attention, a orange symbol is less immediate, a flashing symbol is urgent and other colours are used to illustrate a system that is in operation.

This symbol lights up on the Audi A3 permanently to inform you that engine oil levels are low and need to be replenished. Running significantly low on engine oil can cause catastrophic damage to an engine. See how to check engine oil for further information. Non-urgent but assistance should be sought soon. This may suggest a serious fault. If this symbol illuminates whilst driving, stop the car and switch off the engine immediately. Engines that overheat can seize.

If driving and this symbol illuminates, pull over and switch off the engine immediately. This symbol will illuminate on the dashboard to indicate one of two things. The handbrake is applied, please release the handbrake to continue. If the light remains illuminated with the handbrake released, this indicated a fault in the car brakes system. If driving when the symbol illuminates and the handbrake is fully released, pull over and stop the car immediately and seek assistance.

For further information, see why is the brake light on in my car? This ABS symbol should illuminate for a brief period when the engine is started. If the light remains on or illuminates whilst driving, there is a problem with the anti-lock braking system ABS.

This is not immediately urgent as normal braking will still be effective, though ABS may not function. This symbol should illuminate on the Audi dashboard when the engine starts and soon after extinguish. Engine starting issues may arise. To maintain reliability, assistance from an authorised technician should be sought immediately.

When the car is at a standstill, the car shakes and the ESP lights up and the engine lights "flashes". When I start driving, the engine light stops flashing, but the ESP stays on untill the engine is shut down.

When the engine is turned back on, everything seems ok, untill a longer standstill, then it repeats itself. If i kill the climate control, the problem does not occur. Just bought a Audi A3 8V 1.

Car was in limp mode with erratic idle too. Contact cleaner and a spot of conductive grease on the offending plugs then vcds reset sorted me out. As advised best to get it scanned before worrying too much. NKennyMay 24, I'm having the same issue on my a3 1. DeanoJun 11,
